by Firefly on 17th April 2011

The 15th April 2011 episode of Friday Night SmackDown! starts with a video recapping Edge’s win against Alberto Del Rio at WrestleMania and his announcement on Raw that he was retiring (click here for our Raw report), before Alberto Del Rio makes his way to the ring.

Del Rio talks about how he has respect for Edge and that though it’s his destiny to become the World Heavyweight Champion, he didn’t want it to be this way, but asks Edge to come out and hand over the title to him.

Teddy Long comes out and says that things don’t go like that as he won the opportunity to be in a Ladder match for the World Heavyweight Championship at Extreme Rules and that is what he will be doing, and his opponent will be the winner of the 20-man battle royal later on on the night.

Next up, Ezekiel Jackson (accompanied by The Corre who join the announce table) takes on Kofi Kingston in a match which sees Jackson take advantage of the distraction from Wade Barrett to hit Kingston with the Uranage slam for the 3-count.

Afterwards, Jackson says that the rest of The Corre and the WWE Universe will find out, when he wins the battle royal, that he is the “personification of domination” and the new number one contender.

After LayCool attend a counselling session which Michelle leaves after arguing with Layla, Cody Rhodes is shown in the darkened ring and he talks about how he thought when he defeated Rey Mysterio that he would feel something, but instead he feels nothing and wonders if it will be the same if he becomes the World Heavyweight Champion.

Rhodes talks about how he is not going to stop until Mysterio is a monster and his kids are horrified and see him as one too, just like he sees his own face as horrifying thanks to Mysterio. Mysterio’s music this and Mysterio hits the ring, getting the advantage and hitting a 619 to Rhodes’ stomach and making him bail out up to the ramp.

After a video hyping the début of Amazing Kong, Mysterio is pitted against Drew McIntyre in a match which sees Mysterio hit the 619 and a top-rope splash for the 3-count.

Now, Edge makes his way to the ring with the World Heavyweight Championship, and he talks about how he’ll never get tired of the reaction he just received and that he has been a part of a lot of moments in the WWE.

Edge places the title on the turnbuckle and does his entrance again, before continuing to talk about the response he’s gotten since announcing his retirement, and that though people aren’t happy about it happening, everyone is positive about the fact that the Doctors discovered it instead of in a Ladder match where he might fall and not get back up.

He talks about how Albany is special to him as it is the place where he won his first WWE Championship and that he is glad that his mother is there too, he says that she is the strongest woman that he has ever met and that without her he wouldn’t have had the strength to get through the injuries he sustained in his career.

Edge says that he has to relinquish the title and thanks everyone before putting the title in the middle of the ring and leaving. Backstage Edge is approached by Del Rio when Rosa Mendes talks Spanish to Edge, but Edge doesn’t shake his offered hand and leaves instead.

Next, Layla (accompanied by Michelle) goes against Kelly Kelly in a match which sees Kelly get the victory after rolling up Layla for the 3-count, thanks in part to Michelle who rolls Layla into the ring to stop her from being counted out. Afterwards, LayCool have a confrontation which ends with Michelle pushing Layla over and leaving.

A video recaps the events on Raw involving Jerry “The King” Lawler, Jim Ross, Michael Cole, and Jack Swagger, and another video recaps the match between Triple H and The Undertaker at WrestleMania XXVII with comments from Superstars.

As Alberto Del Rio joins ringside, it’s time for the 20-man battle royal to determine the opponent to face him for the World Heavyweight Championship in the Ladder match at Extreme Rules. The participants are JTG, Kane, The Big Show, Ezekiel Jackson, Chavo Guerrero, Cody Rhodes, Jack Swagger, Brodus Clay, Wade Barrett, Heath Slater, Rey Mysterio, Tyler Reks, Christian, Justin Gabriel, Chris Masters, Curt Hawkins, Yoshi Tatsu, Drew McIntyre, Kofi Kingston, and Trent Baretta.

The match ends with Christian getting the victory despite Del Rio’s attempt to ensure otherwise, as he pulls down the rope when Swagger tries to run at him, which instead sends Swagger to the floor, eliminated.

Afterwards while Del Rio climbs upon the announce table unhappy about the outcome of the match and proclaiming that it is his destiny to become the World Heavyweight Champion, Edge hugs Christian and they celebrate in the ring as SmackDown! goes off the air.
