Raw Fusion: SummerSlam Heats Up
The 9th August episode of Monday Night Raw starts after the titles roll with Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler welcoming us to Raw, then hyping the match for later on between the teams of John Cena/Bret “The Hitman” Hart and Chris Jericho/Edge.
Hart makes his way to the ring and grabs a microphone, he says that for the past two weeks he has been back home in Calgary training like a lunatic for SummerSlam, only to see everything fall apart.
He says that it’s an understatement that he’s a little disappointed, he says last week Edge and Jericho quit Team WWE, but three weeks ago he put his reputation on the line when he went to see Cena and vouched for both guys, telling him that they have the experience and they can see the big picture, knowing that The Nexus’ momentum needs to be stopped, and it needs to be stopped right now.
He calls out Jericho and Edge, in a hope to put things back together again. Jericho comes out and grabs a microphone and tells Hart to impress him and tell him that he’s the best in the world at what he does, but is told by Hart to shut up.
Hart says that isn’t what he came here for and he hasn’t got time for that, he says that it’s put up time, it’s Jericho’s chance to be a man and step up to the plate to change things, he reiterates that he went to Cena and put his reputation on the line for them to join the team, so he says that if they don’t join Team WWE, they’re not hurting them, they’re hurting themselves, as it’s obvious that neither The Nexus, nor the other Superstars want anything to do with them, and if The Nexus walk out of SummerSlam as the winners, Jericho and Edge are only hurting themselves, so they should do the honourable thing.
Hart asks if he’s going to rejoin Team WWE, or if he’s going to disappoint his fans around the world, and look at himself in the mirror in the morning and know he quit. Jericho says that his answer is still no, he says that he had Hart figured out years ago, he’s a phony and a hypocrite just like the crowd, he says he’s only worried about getting a beating from Edge and Jericho and is desperate, knowing that he can’t beat The Nexus at SummerSlam without them, so once again in the WWE, Hart is screwed.
Edge’s music hits and he comes out now and grabs a microphone too, he asks what is wrong with Jericho, saying that he’s Bret “The Hitman” Hart, that they both grew up idolising Hart and Jericho even training in his father’s dungeon, he says that he doesn’t know about Jericho, but Hart can count him in.
As Jericho exits the ring, Edge tries to kick Hart which gets blocked and almost turned into a Sharpshooter until Jericho intervenes to break it up and they both exit the ring as Natalya runs to the ring and enters it, pleading with Hart.
We see The Hart Dynasty getting attacked by The Nexus, with Wade Barrett saying that it’s just not Hart’s day, but he can forget about the Dynasty being the replacements, then leaving as Natalya and Hart run up the ramp.
Next, Hart and Natalya are backstage with a trainer, Cena and the injured Dynasty, with Cena stopping Hart from leaving as he says that The Nexus will just pick them off, he tells him to stay put and that he’s going to talk to The Great Khali.
Back in the arena, The Miz makes his way to the ring for his match against Evan Bourne. The match ends with a victory for The Miz after hitting the Skull-Crushing Finale, afterwards grabbing a microphone and saying that he doesn’t care whether it’s Sheamus or Randy Orton who wins the title on Sunday, when he’s ready he will cash in Money In The Bank and become WWE Champion, because he is The Miz, and he’s Awesome!
After a shot of Cena and Khali talking backstage, we have a Slam Of The Week video recapping the events between Melina and Alicia Fox last week, followed by a non-title match between the two. The match ends with Melina getting the 3-count after hitting the Last Call Sunset Bomb.
Going backstage, Josh Mathews interviews Khali (without his interpreter Ranjin Singh) and asks him who his affiliation is with, Team WWE or The Nexus, to which Khali replies that it’s the WWE, thanking Khali, he is interrupted when Khali says something which Mathews apologises for not understanding but asking if he can say it in English, to which Khali challenges Barrett to a match tonight.
Afterwards, we find out that during the break, the General Manager emailed Michael Cole and announced that due to Melina’s win, she will face Fox for the the Divas Championship at SummerSlam, and the match between Khali and Barrett will happen tonight.
Going backstage, Jericho and Edge are talking, with Jericho having second thoughts about their decision, thinking that maybe they bit off more they can chew this time by making that decision. Edge names Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mr. McMahon, The Rock, The Undertaker, and The Alliance as examples of what they’ve both survived so far, and says that they’ll survive whatever The Nexus does in future.
Jericho says that they’re more than survivors, they are Architects and suggests that they both take out Cena and Hart as without those two it means no match at SummerSlam, and with no match at SummerSlam, it means that they are in the clear.
Going to R-Truth and John Morrison, they tell each other that they have each others backs, but they need two replacements, before being interrupted by Mark Henry saying that he has their back as they only need one, so to consider his next match to be his audition, with the camera then cutting to The Nexus who are watching and after looking to Barrett for a nod, walk out.
Back in the arena again, Ted DiBiase makes his way to the ring with Maryse for the match against Mark Henry, but before Henry gets to the ring, he is attacked by The Nexus who end up sending him into the steel steps.
Now, before Sheamus makes his way to the ring and grabs a microphone, we see a WWE Rewind video recapping the match last week between The Miz and Randy Orton and the aftermath between Orton and Sheamus.
Sheamus says that after Raw went off the air last week, the WWE Universe was convinced that he was scared to get into the ring with Orton, he says that he was scared, but that he was scared at what he might do to him, he says that usually when somebody says that, they’re “talking out of their arse”, but not him – he’s been hurting people since he stepped foot in the WWE and is why he’s the WWE Champion, but if there’s anyone who doubts him, they should watch the video that then plays showing his dominance.
Asking how many people think he’s afraid of Orton now, saying that the footage proves that he’s afraid of nobody in the WWE and he’s ended careers in the ring, then calling out Orton so he can tell him something face-to-face.
Orton makes his way to the ring and grabs a microphone of his own, saying that he’s got something to say to Sheamus. He says that he believes that Sheamus is capable of hurting people, but if he is going to stand there and say that he didn’t want to get into the ring with him last week because he was afraid of what he might do to him, he thinks he’s full of it.
Orton says Sheamus had the opportunity last week, and he blew it just like he will on Sunday at SummerSlam, he says that he can make up all the excuses he wants to, but the fact remains the same, that Sheamus has never beaten Orton, and never will.
Sheamus says that when he beats Orton at SummerSlam, Orton will go back to the end of the line just like Cena, and as long as he is champion, he will never get another title shot. Orton says he is going to beat Sheamus, that Sheamus has never beaten him and won’t on Sunday, but if he wants to redeem himself for what he didn’t do last week, then to do something about it.
After the lights flash and a sound plays, Cole informs us that he has received an email from the General Manager. Quoting the GM, he says that Sheamus’ title matches in the past have been marred with interferences, so if anyone interferes in the match at SummerSlam, they will be suspended indefinitely, but he agrees that if Orton loses, there will be no rematch and he will go back to the end of the line – also agreeing with Orton, if Sheamus is not scared, he encourages him to do something about it right now.
After feinting a punch, Sheamus turns to leave but Orton won’t let him and starts hitting him only to be rebuffed by an Axe Handle to the head, before Sheamus attempts to hit the Brogue Kick but gets a backbreaker from Orton instead, followed by Orton feinting a punt to the head which leaves Sheamus quivering in fear, looking at Orton holding the WWE Championship.
Next up, we have a 6-Man-Tag team match between the NXT Rookies, pittng Kaval, Percy Watson and Lucky Cannon against Michael McGillicutty, Alex Riley, and Husky Harris. The match ends with Harris getting the win over Kaval for the third week in a row after a Senton Backplash. Aftewards, an angry Sheamus hits Cannon with a Brogue Kick, sends McGillicutty into the barrier, and then the High-Cross Powerbomb in the ring to Kaval. Getting on the microphone afterwards, he says that was a message to the General Manager and Randy Orton, guaranteeing that this time next week, he will still be the WWE Champion.
Now, John Morrison and R-Truth take on William Regal and Zack Ryder, with Morrison picking up the win for his team after hitting Starship Pain for the 3-count. Cole and King then hype the matches to take place on Sunday at SummerSlam.
Next, we have a Divas Triple-Threat Tag Summertime Spectacular match with Santino Marella as the Special Guest Referee and Vladimir Kozlov on the outside. The Bella Twins win after a cross-body from the top rope by Nikki on Jillian. Afterwards, Tamina enters the ring and walks up to Santino – he tries to pass twice, but she moves into his way, before finally letting him leave, but slapping his ass as he passes. A rather confused Santino makes his way up the ramp as Tamina looks on with a sly smile with Cole speculating that she may be smitten with Santino.
Now, we have a SummerSlam Recall video showing the events of the Jailhouse match between The Mountie and The Big Bossman at SummerSlam 1991 that Bossman won. Afterwards we see Khali walking backstage where he is subjected to a quick attack by The Nexus.
Back in the arena, The Nexus make their way to the ring, and once inside Barrett says that he has just been informed that the match between himself and Khali has been cancelled. He says that on Sunday, a new chapter is about to be written by The Nexus as the balance of power on Raw is going to shift dramatically and permanently, because they will defeat Team WWE, and when they do they will achieve more than anyone could ever imagine.
Sheffield says that Raw has become their show, that Hart will join Steamboat and McMahon as their victim, and just like those two, they will never be seen again, addressing Morrison, Truth, and Cena, he says that they will not only break them physically, but also mentally, to the point where they will never recover.
Otunga says that if anyone in the locker room is considering joining Team WWE, they should think about what The Nexus did the The Hart Dynasty, Mark Henry, and The Great Khali, and then whether they want to be next, because “You are either Nexus or against us”.
We then see Cena and Hart walking backstage where they are confronted by The Miz, with Cena asking what he wants, The Miz says that they need help, and he thought it’s just a matter of time before they came to find him, when asked what his point is, he says he wants to hear from their mouths, them ask him to join the team, which they do so but he doesn’t give a definitive answer, but rather says that he will let them know on Sunday.
Next up, Edge and Jericho take on Cena and Hart in a Tag Team match with The Nexus at ringside as Lumberjacks. Notable moments are Cena getting attacked by The Nexus every time he is thrown to the outside, but the first twice Jericho is thrown to the outside, they leave him alone, until the time he accidentally knocks Barrett off the ring apron he is then attacked on the outside along with Edge.
The match appears to end with no decision as The Nexus then enter the ring, Morrison and R-Truth then sliding in on Cena and Hart’s side, followed by Jericho and Edge after they talk for a few moments on the ramp.
With Team WWE rushing them and attacking them, Barrett and the rest of The Nexus bail out and escape through the crowd up the stairs, with both teams watching each other from their respective positions, with Cena’s music playing as Raw goes off the air.
