The “Biggest Party of the Summer” entered its 21st incarnation. The hype was primarily focused on the non-title bouts that featured the first encounter between John Cena and Batista and Hell in a Cell with Edge taking on the Undertaker. The latter ranks as one of the best, if not the best HIAC bout, even though it was bloodless (damn you, PG-rating!).

Solid matches and a bit of troubling drama filled the card. Santino Marella is coming into his own as a great and perhaps the funniest heel in recent memory. Making out with the Intercontinental title belt? As his namesake, Gorilla Monsoon, would say, “Give me a break.”

Kofi Kingston shined with his athleticism while the Who-Thinks-This-Guy-Is-Great Khali provided a much needed beer and bathroom break for those in attendance. Seriously. Even JR mentioned that Khali’s “offense” (of which I take offense) is “elementary” and “bowling shoe ugly.” On behalf of elementary students and bowling shoes, I demand an apology!

Which brings me to Mark Henry. One word.

Seriously…

Cena vs. Batista more than made up for the lack of hype and storyline leading up to the match. The two showed why they will be around for a while and will be champions yet again. Speaking of champions, CM Punk shined brightly against JBL. Expect a belt on him again in the future.

The Shawn and Rebecca Michaels vs. Chris Jericho segment was effective in its execution. Mind you, Lady HBK took one for the team, but the sickening snap of her head as Jericho laid down a big ol’ baked potato with sour cream and chives was hard to watch. And they kept showing it over and over again. Legitimate fuel for the fire or cheap heat? I can see both sides, but it did the trick.

Hell in a Cell? It was pure heaven for a wrestling fan. Fast-paced and violent. Essentially a TLC match within the “Devil’s Playground.” Edge continues to show why he has earned his main-event status. And the Undertaker is the one and only icon of WWE. He has been there consistently for the long haul (coming up quickly on 18 years) and continues to deliver. Yeah, Ric Flair is a legend. HBK has wowed us. Triple H is the “King of Kings” whatever that means. But ‘Taker is “the man.”
