SD Fusion: Hype & Nostalgia

by Firefly on 31st March 2012

The UK airing of the 30th March 2012 episode of Friday Night SmackDown! is entirely comprised of various matches from past WrestleMania events, such as “Macho Man” Randy Savage taking on Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat at WrestleMania III (3), “Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels being pitted against Chris Jericho, and The Rock going against “Stone Cold” Steve Austin, both from WrestleMania XIX (19).

Other WrestleMania matches aired are The Undertaker facing Randy Orton at WrestleMania 21, John Cena, The Big Show, and Edge taking on each other in a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania XXV (25), and The Undertaker’s match against Triple H last year at WrestleMania XXVII (27) (click here for our WrestleMania XXVII report).

As for the US airing of Friday Night SmackDown!, although it is obviously still WrestleMania-heavy and video package-heavy too, it is more hype of the upcoming WrestleMania and its matches, rather than recapping past ones, and it includes scenes from WrestleMania Axxess in Miami, with Michael Cole and Jerry “The King” Lawler.

A match between “Team Teddy” member “Long Island Iced Z” Zack Ryder and “Team Johnny” member Drew McIntyre sees Ryder get the victory, when he hits McIntyre with the Rough Ryder for the 3-count.

Various events from this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw are also recapped, such as what lead to Booker T being added to “Team Teddy”, as well as the confrontation between John Cena and The Rock from the end of Raw (click here for our Raw report) that also ends this US airing of SmackDown!.

The Big Show talks about his career so far as well as what is to come on Sunday at WrestleMania, and he says that Cody Rhodes has made it abundantly clear that he plans on making a name for himself against The Big Show on the “Grandest Stage Of Them All”, and that if you look at Show’s history, it is a brilliant plan.

Show says that the problem with that plan is that Rhodes won’t be stepping into the ring at WrestleMania XXVIII (28) with history, but will instead be stepping into the ring with the World’s Largest Athlete.

He says that his words may ring hollow to some as he has said it before, but he says that this time is different as he feels it in his gut, his mind, and his heart. The Big Show says that Cody Rhodes called him a choke artist, but at WrestleMania, Rhodes is going to get chokeslammed.

The Big Show says that Cody Rhodes’ career is not going to get made, but that it will instead get broken, when Show becomes the new Intercontinental Champion. He says that on Sunday at WrestleMania, he will have his WrestleMania moment.

A match with Chris Jericho taking on Kofi Kingston sees Jericho get the victory, when he counters Kingston’s attempt at hitting Trouble In Paradise into the Walls Of Jericho, forcing Kingston to tap out.
