PPV Fusion: Money In The Bank 2011

by Firefly on 18th July 2011

The 2011 WWE Money In The Bank Pay-Per-View starts with a video recapping CM Punk’s announcement that at midnight on the July 17th 2011, his contract with the WWE will be at an end, and that he will win the WWE Championship and take it with him out of the company, as well as the other comments he made towards Vince McMahon, John Cena, and also recapping McMahon’s ultimatum to Cena that if Punk wins, then he’ll fire Cena.

The first match to kick us off is the SmackDown! Money In The Bank Ladder match, which sees Sin Cara, Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Sheamus, Cody Rhodes, Heath Slater, Daniel Bryan, and Kane take on each other for a shot at a contract to cash in for a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship, at any time they choose for up to one year.

The match ends with Bryan getting the victory when he counters Barrett’s attempt at hitting him with The Wasteland from the ladder, by hitting him with a kick, and then reaching up to grab the briefcase.

Particularly notable moments in the match are Sin Cara being powerbombed through a ladder by Sheamus, putting him out of the match, and a 450-Splash by Justin Gabriel from a turnbuckle-mounted ladder onto Kane.

A video is shown of Vince McMahon’s arrival earlier on with John Laurinaitis and a man who they announcers identify as an attorney for the WWE, which the announcers say is a last-ditch attempt to get CM Punk to sign a new contract.

Next, Brie Bella (accompanied by Nikki) is pitted against Kelly Kelly (accompanied by Eve Torres) for the Divas Championship in a match which sees Kelly retain the title when she hits Brie with the K2 for the 3-count and the victory.

After a video hyping the next WWE Pay-Per-View, SummerSlam, to take place on August 14th 2011, and a video recapping the events involving Mark Henry and The Big Show that led to the following match to take place, The Big Show goes against Mark Henry in a match which sees Henry get the victory when he hits Show with the World’s Strongest Slam and follows it up with two big splashes for the 3-count.

Henry apparently doesn’t think that Show has suffered enough, as afterwards he grabs a steel chair and places it around Show’s ankle, before climbing to the second rope and doing a knee drop onto the chair. Mark Henry leaves after the damage has been done, but The Big Show has to be driven away on the back of a motorised stretcher.

Backstage, Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis are shown talking about the negotiations when a knock is heard and Laurinaitis invites the person in. The visitor is revealed to be Josh Mathews, who apologises for interrupting, but asks McMahon whether he did sign CM Punk or not.

McMahon says that he didn’t, and says that Punk is the biggest ingrate he has ever met, as he offered him the biggest contract he has ever offered anyone, and he turned him down, so he says that the Punk fans should not blame him as he did everything he could to try to keep him on the roster.

When Mathews prods McMahon for what Punk said, McMahon says that he simply pointed at the door and told him to get out, which McMahon expresses disbelief at, that he told him of all people to get out.

Josh Mathews starts to say something about John Cena, but Vince McMahon interrupts and says that Cena is the reason for the problem to begin with, and that he brought the problem upon him and everybody else, insisting that this is what the fans and everyone want, and he says that it is on John Cena, and that if by some chance CM Punk leaves the building with the WWE Championship, may God have mercy on Cena’s soul.

Back in the arena, the Raw Money In The Bank Ladder match takes place, with Alberto Del Rio, Kofi Kingston, Jack Swagger, Evan Bourne, R-Truth, Alex Riley, The Miz, and Rey Mysterio taking each other on for a shot at a contract that they can cash in at any time for up to one year, for a shot at the WWE Championship – though would it still be valid if Punk wins later on and leaves with the WWE Championship?

The match ends with Alberto Del Rio getting the victory when he rips the mask off Rey Mysterio, setting up the ladder again due to the domino effect that seems to cause which knocks them down, and climbing up it to grab the briefcase.

Particularly notable moments in the match are it starting off with everyone holding a ladder in their hands, with all the others subsequently attacking Del Rio first, likely as payback for Del Rio’s own actions against them on Raw (click here for our Raw report), and Evan Bourne hitting the shooting star press onto everyone, from the tall ladder at the bottom of the ramp.

After a video hyping WrestleMania XXVIII (28), that travel packages will be on sale on July 18th 2011, and to see WWE.com for details, we see a video recapping the events over the past few months involving Christian and Randy Orton that lead to the upcoming match between the two and with the stipulation that if Orton gets disqualified or there is another case of bad officiating, Christian will automatically become the new World Heavyweight Champion.

Backstage again, Alberto Del Rio is interviewed by Josh Mathews, who congratulates him on his victory and asks him what it is like to be Mr. Money In The Bank after such a brutal match. Del Rio says that he doesn’t even know why he was in Money In The Bank in the first place, as he won the triple threat match a couple of weeks ago so he was the number one contender.

He says that now we have CM Punk up there, but it doesn’t matter as he proved to everybody how great Alberto Del Rio. When asked by Mathews if it was his destiny to win Money In The Bank, Del Rio says that it is not part of his destiny, but just a formality, as his destiny is to become the new WWE Champion.

Back in the arena once more, Christian is pitted against Randy Orton in a match for the World Heavyweight Championship, with the stipulations mentioned earlier. The match ends with Christian getting the victory to become the new World Heavyweight Champion as a result of a disqualification, thanks to Orton hitting him with a blatant low blow in front of the referee, having snapped after Christian spat at his face shortly before.

Afterwards, Orton realises that he let Christian get to him and did exactly what he wanted him to, so decides to take revenge by attacking him. He hits Christian with a monitor and then an RKO on the Spanish announce table, before starting to leave, but he changes his mind when he reaches the ramp, going back and giving Christian with another RKO on the announce table that oddly still doesn’t make the table collapse.

After another video promoting SummerSlam, and a video recapping the events involving CM Punk, Vince McMahon, and John Cena over the past few weeks, CM Punk goes against John Cena in a match for the WWE Championship.

CM Punk gets a huge hometown reaction as expected, but he did throughout the rest of the night too, with “CM Punk” chants during (amongst others) the SmackDown! Money In The Bank match and when The Big Show was being taken away on a stretcher, despite the fact that he wasn’t in or present at any of the other matches.

Towards the end of the match, Vince McMahon and John Laurinaitis make their way down the ramp, with the presence apparently providing enough distraction for John Cena to recover somewhat and take advantage of CM Punk’s distracted state when he re-enters the ring, and apply the STF to him.

McMahon immediately tries to call for the bell, in an attempt to repeat the 1997 Montreal Screwjob, sending Laurinaitis to go and handle it when the timekeeper doesn’t appear to take any notice of what he is saying.

Laurinaitis is intercepted by John Cena, who bails out of the ring and hits him with a right hand, before walking around to Vince McMahon and indicating that this match will not end that way. This appears to be Cena’s downfall however, as he re-enters the ring only to be hit with the GTS by CM Punk, and pinned for the 3-count making Punk the new WWE Champion.

Afterwards, McMahon marches around to the announce table and grabs Jerry “The King” Lawler’s headset before ordering that they cut Punk’s music immediately, and send out Alberto Del Rio. After a few moments, Del Rio runs out with his Money In The Bank briefcase, but when he enters the ring he is taken out by a kick to the head from Punk.

CM Punk exits the ring and decides to leave through his hometown crowd, and while McMahon watches on from ringside, Punk celebrates in the crowd with the WWE Championship held aloft as Money In The Bank goes off the air.
